Frozen, Wicked, Mean Girls & More: London’s Pride Musical Picks

London’s Pride weekend to almost upon us, and what better way to start it off with a musical. So, I have put together a hand picked list of unmissable musicals to kick off pride weekend.

Wicked

We all know the story of Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” right? Well, Wicked lets the wicked witch of the west step into the spotlight to tell her untold side of the story, after all there is two sides to every story.

Wicked tells the story of the dysfunctional but mighty friendship between two college girls, the popular (and blonde) Glinda and the wicked witch herself- Elphaba. With themes such as friendship, self-love, power and popularity and iconic songs such as “deifying gravity, you’re bound to have a wicked time.

Disney’s Frozen the Musical (Pride performance)

Get transported into the world of Arendelle (based on the town of Arendal), and meet two isolated sisters, Anna and Elsa, who have been torn apart by Elsa’s icy secret- she has magical powers. With iconic numbers such as “do you want to build a snowman”, “in summer” and of course the smash hit “let it go” brought onto the stage, you’re guarantied to have a magical time.

In addition, Frozen the Musical is putting on a special performance, in celebration of London’s Pride on the 28 June. According to the official Frozen the Musical website, you can expect a rainbow poster giveaway, a showing of the short film “out,” a pride photo op and more, and as well as a special “magical moment at curtain call.”

What’s more, Frozen is collecting donations throughout the week to raise money for Diversity Role Models, a charity aiming to end bullying against those who are LGBTQ+., and you can also support the charity by buying a “love is an open door” t-shirt, as the proceeds go to Diversity Role Models!

Mean Girls

If you didn’t already know, the plastics and their disciples have may their way the London to bring you the musical version of mean girls! Based on the hit movie by the same name, mean girls originated iconic one liners, such as “on Wednesday’s were pink” and “I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a cool mom,” and follows Cady Herron as she stumbles her way through unfamiliar territory- High School. Unaware on the cattiness of popular high school girls, Cady mistakenly befriends a group of A-Listers, by the name of “the plastics.”

Mamma Mia!

Celebrating a whopping 25th years on the stage, Mamma Mia! tells the story of a mother-daughter relationship and a 3-possible-fathers-daughter relationship, on a (fictional) Greek island by the name of Kalokairi. Expect energetic musical numbers, and of course, lots and lots of sun!

I’ve personally seen the UK tour version Mamma Mia (watch this space for a review) and, although I did see a different cast, I can confirm the storyline and songs make it very much a feel-good musical. Oh, and I left the best bit till last- the story is told through ABBA songs! What’s not to love?

Les Misérables

Fancy something that’s a bit more hit-you-in-the-gut? With devastating (and iconic) songs such as “I dreamed a dream” and “on my own,” Les Misérables is clearly the epitome of that. Les Mis is the longest running musical, and it is that for a reason!

Les Mis follows ex-convict Jean Valjean who breaks his parole in order to attempt to start a new life, all while being relentlessly hunted by Javert- a dedicated and “doing his duty” prison guard. Meanwhile, he founds himself being the guardian of a girl called Cosette who he must protect from this secret, and stumbles upon many people along the way- memorable characters such as Eponine, Maruis, and Fantine., .

I’ve actually seen Les Mis and so if you would like to read my review, you can do so here: Les Misérables Review- A Heart Full Of Love For Les Mis | Chorus Box | Engaging Insights about Musical Theatre

Wicked- Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship is powerful and beautiful (the ultimate friendship, in my opinion)

Les Mis- yep, there for sure is a reason why it is the longest-running musical (epic, powerful, passionate, inspiring…..)

Mamma Mia- seeing it tomorrow (my 2nd time)

Most times I see musicals are the US Tour

Mamma Mia was how I first discovered Abba, the beginning of discovering jukebox musicals. This year, I saw two jukebox musicals- Moulin Rouge and Mamma Mia
